Are you local?

Thursday, September 2nd 2010, 6:21 pm

are you local web designers

With communication becoming easier through email and the internet you don’t always need face to face meetings between company and client but are the days of using a local web design company dead?

Once upon a time communities where precious and you got website design and build from your mates, dads, brothers, pal who knew a bit about websites, although this could be fatal at times if the end person doesn’t know what they are doing, but there is a lot to be said for word of mouth recommendations. As web design companies sprouted up all over the place it was testimonials that got you work, many of which were local and from word of mouth. Now we rely more on Google to find a good website designer cutting out the personal recommendation although often getting you a good supplier.

Today we have many forms of communication, you can email images and even have webinars where you can present ideas, by cutting down on face to face meetings web design can become a quicker process with lower overheads. This is a win win situation for any company, the designers can do what they are good at and the company get a great website with less hassle.

This is a great opportunity for Web designers Manchester to work with clients all over the UK and often internationally, this is a business model that works very well for SEO Creative as by cutting down on face to face meetings and travel we can keep our overheads lower and production high. Our web design works from a brief given by the client and we use methods such as email, test servers and video conferencing and skype to work out the projects and we can complete the web site designs within budget and timelines easily.

Face to face meetings are sometimes necessary especially when a client is unsure about what they want, this is important to brainstorm with the client and often face to face is the easiest way to do this and avoid confusion or misunderstanding.  That being said, as the need for face to face meetings diminish is there any benefit in sticking with a local company?

Yes!

For many businesses you can use any website designer, however if your business is a local business and you are targeting local people then sometimes it is good to use a web designer that understands the audience. If you are a business owner in Cheshire and you want your website to target people in Cheshire then you wouldn’t use a London designer you would look for a web design agency Cheshire.

Haviong local knowledge can often give you the edge if you are looking to target people in your area and with the economy as it is there is nothing wrong with giving back to your local suppliers. SEO creative work with many companies all over the UK as well as internationally both for SEO and Web design but we love working with local companies in Manchester and Cheshire. By working with local companies we can add value to their business as we know their target audience better and if necessary can pop in for a chat about the website design giving the clients the customer service they deserve.

Event Photography Manchester Drifting

Photography is a key element in making your website stand out and look great, a good website design can be made even better with good photography. SEO Creative have offered website photography for a while but have recently expanded with Event photography.

As we approach our first year of the website being live we have expanded our business with new recruits and joining with more freelancers to offer a fuller service. One of the ways we have grown our services is with event photography. We have 2 new photographers who are very experienced in event photography, as well as website, commercial, wedding and portrait photography. It is for this reason we are proud to offer photography as an additional service.

Event photography Manchester has become very popular as many event organisers like to document successful events with film and photography. By getting good images from your event you can give people a good idea of future events, and it also encourages people who attended the event to come back to your website where they may see something else of interest.

Event organisers will also want to show off how well their plans went ahead with any photographs of decorations or influential guests. We offer experienced event photographers who can not only document your event in image but will not intrude on the actual event by staying in the back ground. We can offer you either one or two photographers for the event and will bring any lights and equipment we may need to get the lighting right. We will capture staged shots as well as photographs of your guests enjoying themselves. At the end you will get the disc and the rights of your images to use on your website. Bcause we give you the rights to your images you can also use the images on printed documents, brochures or leaflets you may wany to produce. This is a low cost option as many photographers will only give you edited web versions that are not suitable for any other medium and will charge you extra if you need a different resolution or any print outs.

Over the next month we will be updating the website to include more images in our photography portfolio and you can get a better idea of the photography we now have on offer.

For more information on our services and new photography offerings then get in contact.

Manchester SEO Mini Conference confirmed

Tuesday, August 31st 2010, 4:58 pm

SEO Manchester is big and with many of the top SEO’s residing in Manchester it makes sense to hold SEO events in Manchester and with a little help from the organisers of SASCon we have another Manchester SEO Mini Conference confirmed.

Unlike the SASCon event held earlier this year the Manchester SEO Mini Conference has limited spaces, as it is being held at the MDDA rooms on Portland Street which only has the capacity for around 60 visitors. With limited spaces it may be useful for SEO’s in Manchester to book early to avoid disapointment. Peter Young (Holistic Search) and Simon Wharton (Push On)are helping to organise this event which hopefully means the line up will be as exciting as other events they have organised.

The event is being held on the 29th October and boasts speakers such as Barry Adams, Nichola Stott, Neil Walker and Kelvin Newman. This hopefully will be the first of many Manchester SEO conferences where we can enjoy hearing from some of the local SEO’s who are renouned in the industry.

Manchester is an up and coming city that has some of the best media agencies, design compaines and SEO consultants in the UK so why should we have to travel all the way down to places like London, lining Richard Bransons pockets, just to hear our own talk about what they do best? SEOs Manchester has proven results all over the world and with some of the best and brightest in the industry already here it is about time we took advantage of this.

Hopefully the SEO Creative bosses will let me attend this conference as I would love to hear what the speakers have to say, if you are thinking about going then you better book your place quick as mentioned there are limited places! Online Marketing Vs Traditional Marketing

Tuesday, August 31st 2010, 10:51 am

SEO’s Manchester are often asked about the best way to market your business online and offline but depending on your business it can be difficult to come up with a definitive solution. When running a business marketing is essential to attract new business, but what is better online marketing or more traditional forms of marketing?

We have recently been looking after an Online Marketing Campaign which involved pushing a concept and brand awareness to a particular demographic over a number of weeks. This is unusual as many of our online marketing campaigns are more long term than a few weeks as SEO is a longer process and can take a few months to take effect.

This particular campaign was run a long side a more traditional campaign of Radio and poster advertising so it was interesting to see how the two worked together. Unfortunately in this case there were issues with client approval that meant that the campaigns were not in complete synergy, however the campaign was very successful and surpassed all expectations.

When looking through the hits to the site it was quite obvious which areas of marketing had been more influential at particular times. From a cross examination of the data we could see that in this case apart from a seperate area of the campaign that was hosted elsewhere the Radio advertising that was broadcast at particular times of the week were very successful. So what is better? Online Marketing or Traditional Marketing?

In this case they had a particular geographic target therefore local radio was very influential but if this is not the case it can be very expensive to use Radio or Television to spread a message, although can be very powerful if you get it right. Traditional Marketing has been tried and tested and experts in this area can help you get the best for your money depending on your marketing targets however these forms of marketing are very expensive and over the years Radio and TV have become less influential in certain areas.

Online marketing has seen a big boost as many people spend long hours on the internet and often use search engines to recommend suppliers. The amount of spend for an online marketing campaign is a lot lower on average to a traditional marketing campaign, although you can be limited with many Pay Per Click and affiliate models to the amount of exposure you get, for example once your budget is spent you will not get any more exposure whereas a radio or TV advert can reach millions although it is not guaranteed.

Online marketing is a much more cost effective way to market your business however if you do have the budget it is worth looking into a campaign that incorporates both as they can work very well together.

Using Flash for SEO

Tuesday, August 24th 2010, 9:39 am

Flash

Go to most SEO companies and ask them about Flash and they will inform you that Flash and SEO don’t go! We disagree as Flash specialists Manchester SEO Creative combine good SEO with Flash that will actually help your website, help conversions and help your SEO.

Search Engines see content and links, they are OK with images providing their is a suitable ‘alt’ text however Flash is one area they still struggle with. Google claims to be working towards being able to index Flash but we have seen very little evidence of this being succesful. In fact, if you have a beautiful, creative, and often expensive Flash website, the chances are it is pretty much invisible to Google. You can do certain things to get the site ranking, such as Flash replacement text, adding a blog and a very strong linking campaign, however it will struggle against its HTML competitors.

So SEO and Flash don’t go…. fair enough if the search engines can’t see it what is the point of Flash?

SEO Creative disagree, Flash is a very useful tool that can help your SEO. We wouldn’t suggest you build a website in Flash if you want the site to do well in the search engines, and other SEO’s would agree that Flash components on your website can be beneficial to the design and help conversions, but how can Flash actually help your SEO?

You will hear about how content is King in SEO! This is because of the obvious fact that Google can read good copy, it can set you aside etc etc. But also good content can come in other forms such as video and Flash. Although Google struggles to index other forms of media, especially Flash, users love it! If a user loves it, they will link to it and Google likes links, especially natural links.

One area we havefound very successful for your SEO campaigns are Flash games, these games are easy to use, well designed and often have a brand message within them, addictive and generate good quality links to the website.

Basically good content in Flash will help your site more naturally, this will benefit your SEO as people link to your website but will also help you raise your brand awareness and conversions.

SEO Content Writing

Monday, August 23rd 2010, 8:47 am

Many business owners don’t understand the value of good SEO content, however good SEO content can help you gain visibility in the search engines as well as increase conversions on the website. Usability goes hand in hand with SEO, Manchester content writers understand this and help you get the correct balance for your target audience.

Content and SEO go together like peas and carrots and many webistes fall short on their on page and off page content strategy instead opting for a more minimal design. Although your design is very important to attract your target audience and increase conversions it is also very important that people find your website. As search engines are still the main source of traffic SEO content writing needs to be worked into your online strategy.

SEO content writing has recieved a lot of bad press over the years, as to keep costs low many SEO companies outsource content to other countries who don’t always have English as a first language. This was where the reputation for SEO content being spammy and gramatically incorrect first came from. However, like many other aspects of SEO, content writing has moved on significantly since then and creative content written by qualified copywriters is more the norm.

SEO content for your website has to include your keywords and it is very important as a business owner you understand that Google, and often not a lot of your customers, will understand your industry jargon therefore a lot of content needs to be quite obvious and explanotory. Although some clients object to this kind of content, thinking it dumbs down a website, user studies have shown that more simplistic and concise content is easier to understand and therefore more likely to convert.

Many users got confused when looking at content that used too much jargon, or wasn’t straight to the point, users couldn’t see quickly what the website did or was selling therefore clicked off the site very quickly.

There is a point when content can be too simple and sometimes condescending, the trick is to write content that is both appealing to your target audience as well as being straight forward enough for Search Engines to understand.

SEO Content writing isn’t just for your website content, but you can also adapt a stong off page campaign with regular blog writing, article submissions and press releases to help your overall SEO performance.

SEO Manchester Vs SEO London

Wednesday, August 18th 2010, 9:09 am

Never before has the North South divide been so great than in the SEO industry, there are two major cities that battle out for the big SEO deals, SEO Manchester and SEO London. So who wins?

Well as SEO Creative is a Manchester based SEO company we are a little biased towards the Northern SEO’s although most of our SEO consultants have learnt SEO from some of the top companies in the UK- based in Manchester.

We are not the only SEO company that lean towards Manchester being the best city for SEO, Neil Walker one of the original founders of Just Search wrote an interesting article on which SEO’s are better, North or South. This article, although was started from a fun conversation, was quite analytical using information from the SERPs to see how SEO companies were ranking for their desired keywords. This data was put into areas of their head offices to show how the companies are dominating the searches for keywords such as SEO, Search Engine Optimisation and Internet Marketing etc.

seo results by area from seomad.co.uk

Neil broke this information down further, into cities, to show that the majority of SEO companies with the top SEO results are based in Manchester:

SEO results by city from seomad.co.uk

Neils article was looking at the top results for particular keywords that all the SEO companies want to work towards, however he didn’t look at the top 3, top 5 and top 10 results which are also a good indication of results. A more thorough look would be to see what proportion of the top ten were northern and southern SEO companies, although I’m sure Neil didn’t have time to do this :) . As overall there may be more or less Manchester SEO’s in this research.

SEO Manchester

So what is it that makes Northern Monkeys better at SEO than our Southern friends? And are we really better or is it just that the southerners have more clients therefore don’t have as much time to work on their own SEO results?

There are many good SEO companies ‘down south’ and this article is just a bit of fun, but recently when companies are chosing an SEO supplier they are moving away from the Londoncentric trends that have domintated the economy for decades. It seems that Manchester, as a vibrant and growing city, one of the areas we are excelling in is SEO and more of the International companies who would once only use a London based company are now looking to SEO Manchester to get them results.

From talking to other SEO’s in the Manchester area it seems many are adopting a more strategic approach to SEO, as Manchester is a creative city it seems this flair has rubbed off on SEO’s as Manchester SEO’s are looking at new ways to approach website optimisation. The role of an SEO is turning into that of a business advisor in some cases as SEO’s help the website do well overall and words like CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) and ROI are popping into the Manchester SEO’s vocabulary.

I am not saying that this is not the same in London or other areas of the UK but with so many SEO companies in Manchester competing for work the best way to add value to your service is to get the best results that are accountable in other ways than a web ranker report.

The biggest USP for SEO Manchester compared to our London counterparts is price! With cost of living (and renting offices) being so much lower in Manchester compared to London these costs are passed to the client and in the recession many big companies have been opting for a Manchester company that provides the same service for less money. Makes sense really!

As mentioned this article is a bit of fun and there are good and bad SEO companies all over the UK (and further afield) if you really want to test an SEO’s credentials you need to see their case studies and testimonials, check reviews and compare to other agencies. Don’t rush into a decision find the best SEO company for you!

Bing overtakes Yahoo

Tuesday, August 17th 2010, 10:07 am

Google Bing and Yahoo stats

According to stats from Chikita it looks like Bing has overtaken Yahoo in the fight for the Search Engine market share, however they are still a long way from Google. Should Google be worried?

Internet marketing consultants and SEO’s in Manchester, London and the UK are always keeping an eye out for changes in searchers behaviour, such as the use of social media and search engines that are dominating the market share. SEO Creative mostly focus our campaigns on Google but have to be aware that certain demographics may be inclined to use other search engines, especially when they are set as defaults on computers or social media platforms. I originally saw this post on Search Engine Land where they discuss in more detail the stats from Chikita.

Bing launched last year and with a lot of marketing has done very well considering the tough market place, and for the first time since Microsoft launched Bing is now number 2 in the top search engines according to Chikita. Will this affect SEO? Or will we still consider Google to be the main player?

table of search engine stats

From the stats Google still has a massive lead and although Bing has overtaken Yahoo there is still a long way to go before they become serious competition to Google. Although are Google concerned? There have been a few early releases of products recently that have lacked in thorough testing, they have even trialed the background image typical of the Bing Search Engine, is this because they are concerned by Bing and want to keep the edge over Microsofts champion?

I don’t think Google has anything to worry about any time soon although the Bing adverts, Facebook and Microsoft products such as the Xbox and hotmail using Bing as its default search engine will have contributed significantly to this increase in searches. A lot of feedback from Bing users seems to be that the results are still not as good as Google, and many people report spammy sites having high listings in the Bing SERPs.

If you are interested in the full findings from Chikita visit their blog later today as they will be publishing the report on the changes in the search engine trends.

When social media meets real life socials!

Thursday, July 22nd 2010, 11:37 am

It seems the people that make up the SEO and Social Media marketing industry are a social bunch in real life, not just on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. There are a number of regional SEO meet ups that happen on a regular basis, with the most active being the Manchester SEO and Brighton SEO social groups. These events were initially just organised as part of active groups on LinkedIn, but now have their own blog and even websites dedicated to discussing the times and locations of the next meet.

These evenings are a good opportunity to meet up with other people in the same industry. You can discuss the latest industry news, techniques that you have found to work well for you or your clients, and even in some cases open up some business opportunities (just because you’re working in the same industry doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a direct competitor – you may offer similar or even complimentary services so you can work together and get the best for your clients).

Although I personally still haven’t attended one of these evenings yet (I’m not even going to try and make an excuse!) I’m pretty sure that the SEO talk only lasts for a few minutes, and then once the beer kicks in it’s just another messy night!

The next Manchester SEO social is on Thursday the 29th July 2010, and starts at Dukes (also known as Dukes 92 in Castlefield). You can visit the Manc SEO website here: www.manchester-seo.org

Search and Social Media Marketing Course

Thursday, July 22nd 2010, 11:00 am

The University of Salford Business school have been working with the media industry in the North West to create a new course in Search and Social Media Marketing. The course is designed to improve search and social media marketing skills, and is aimed at individuals and businesses that want to improve the rankings and traffic of their websites. The course has been accredited by SEMPO, and is one of the first of it’s kind as it has been part of a collaboration between some the leading agencies in the North West (PushON, Latitude and Mediaedge).

The course is a 10 week evening course (one evening per week), so it is accessible to both individuals and business owners that want to that wish to take part. There will also be online support, and the it will eventually leads to an industry recognised qualification. What makes this so unique in my opinion, is that the attendees will have access to the latest information and practices from the leading agencies involved in Search and Social Media Marketing. This is very different from a lot of theory based courses that can be out of date before you have even started.

There is a special open evening on the 29th July 2010 at 5.30pm for people that want to find out more. You can find out more about it, here: www.searchmarketing.salford.ac.uk.

Here are a few quotes from some of the course partners:

Simon Wharton, MD of PushON
“This course is going to bring the knowledge of those in the trenches on a level with those in academia and will give great exposure to anyone wanting to update or develop their Search and Social Marketing skills.”

Richard Gregory, COO of Latitude
“Search and Social Marketing is an industry that has experienced exponential growth over the past decade — a course that allows delegates to reflect on the past and prepare for the dynamic future is exactly what is needed.”
